ER Physician, TEDx presenter, Best Selling Author and host of CBC Radio’s popular White Coat, Black Art Dr. Brian Goldman presents us with his unique insights on the culture of modern medicine, as he unpacks and demystifies what goes on inside medicine’s sliding doors and in the hearts and minds of his colleagues. Technology and shifting demographics are shaking healthcare's foundations. Dr. Goldman gives his perspective on several key trends that affect patients and physicians, and carry huge implications to our industry - especially the providers of living benefits products. They include:
· E-cigarettes: what is the risk?
· Depression and anxiety disorders: Increasing incidents in teens and young adults
· Sports related injuries: the impact and longer-term risks
· Over-diagnosis of cancers: The implications of routine screening and increasingly sensitive imaging in the context of cancer prevention

Medications and health products that can be purchased over-the-counter at the pharmacy without a prescription are assumed to be safe, but these products do carry the risk of side effects, especially when not used as recommended. Sherry Torkos, pharmacist and author will review commonly used over the counter drugs and their surprising side effects and offers up some safer alternatives. A holistic Pharmacist, lecturer and award-winning author of The Canadian Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, Sherry integrates conventional and complementary therapies to help us prevent disease. As a leading health expert presenting to medical professionals and the public, Sherry is frequently interviewed on radio and TV talk shows.

Legalizing Cannabis: Regulatory and Health Considerations
Dr. Mark A. Ware, BA, MBBS, MSc
In 2016, the federal government appointed a Task Force to study and report on the issues to be considered in anticipation of legalizing and regulating cannabis in Canada. The committee gathered input from a wide range of stakeholders across the country. The Task Force Report will be at the heart of new legislation proposals, expected in the Spring of 2017. Dr. Ware presents us with an overview of the considerations and findings of the Task Force, the path towards legalization in Canada, as well as an insightful discussion on the health implications of legalized cannabis.
Dr. Mark A. Ware is an Associate Professor in Family Medicine and Anesthesia at McGill University and family physician who practices pain medicine in Montréal, Québec. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Queen's University (BA 1986) and graduated in Medicine from the University of the West Indies (MBBS 1992), obtaining a Master's degree in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (MSc 1999). Director of Clinical Research of the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit at the McGill University Health Centre, he serves as the co-Director of the Québec Pain Research Network, and since 2007, has been the Executive Director of the Canadian Consortium for the Investigation of Cannabinoids (CCIC). In 2016, he served as the vice-chair of the Federal Task Force on the legalization and regulation of cannabis in Canada.
